Datla history

From Dharanikota to the Godavari

The Datla community dates back to the time of the Kakatiyas, who ruled from Warangal.

1. 1100–1400

   Rulers of Dharanikota

   Some of the Dhanunjaya Gotra Kshatriyas of Andhra Pradesh ruled from Dharanikota, near Guntur. They were contemporaries of the Kakatiyas and had marriage alliances with women of the Kakatiya family.

2. After 1400

   Villages become surnames

   After the fall of the Kakatiya and other dynasties, the rulers of Dharanikota, also known as the Kota Vamsam, moved to different villages and took the names of those places as their surnames.

3. c. 1400

   The gift of Datla

   Krishnam Raju of this clan married Buchhi Seetayyama, of the Mandapati surname, from the Kakatiya family (who by then had probably lost the kingdom), and received the village of Datla as a gift. He and his descendants lived there for more than 200 years.

4. 1630

   Four branches move out

   Four of his descendants moved to East Godavari, Mutyalampadu and Ongole and took the surname Datla. Among them, Datla Perumal Raju migrated to East Godavari district. He had three sons.

5. Later

   Deevan of Peddapuram Samsthanam

   Perumal Raju’s son Venkatapathi Raju served as Deevan in the Peddapuram Samsthanam. His grandsons moved to six villages in West Godavari, where their families still lived as of 2009.

6. Today

   16–17 generations

   About 16 to 17 generations have passed since Perumal Raju, and all their family trees are maintained.
